There is a known bug with some Citrix Receiver versions and Google Chrome that requires manual intervention to restore functionality. This article explains the conditions under which it happens and a workaround. At the time of writing, Citrix has not provided a bug fix other than to install the latest version.
Conditions under which the bug occurs:
- The computer uses Microsoft Windows 7, 8, or 10 as the operating system
- Google Chrome is used when visiting the web portal. This bug does not seem to occur with Internet Explorer
- Citrix Receiver version 4.1.xxx or older is installed on the PC
- The user has already successfully opened various Citrix applications without issue
- Seemingly randomly, it's no longer possible to open Citrix applications
By default, Citrix Receiver is supposed to automatically delete the temporary ICA settings files downloaded by Chrome. It fails to do that, so instead they accumulate in the user's Downloads folder for Chrome. Once 100 of these temporary ICA files accumulate, it's no longer possible to launch Citrix applications.
As a workaround to this bug, follow these steps:
- Open Google Chrome
- In the top right corner of the Chrome window, click on the "pancake stack" settings icon
- From the menu, choose Downloads
- From the Downloads page, click on "Open downloads folder", located in the top right corner
- From the Downloads folder, click in the Search box located in the top right corner
- In the search box, type in *.ica
- A list of ICA files found should be shown in the main panel now
- IMPORTANT: scroll through the list of files found to make sure that no files you need to keep are listed. Typically, all the filenames will start with "launch" but may instead appear to be very randomly named
- Select all of the files found and delete them
